• Re: How to handle email (validation)?

    zarniwoop,

I then went into ENTER, then action list and added the -V (as my original message).

Under that, you should still have a (GO) to main menu

Sounds like that might not be there now?

I went into newinfo menu in my default theme.
    Activation List has:
(-V) Validate e-mail address (data: 20, access: s10, gridev: Selected)
(GO) Go to new menu (data: main, access:, gridev: Selected)

When I hit Enter, it just goes straight to one liners or whatever next screen is for people to login into ... I do have Login After Apply set to YES in my Configuration -> Login/Matrix settings... Not sure if that matters.

Is there a way to test if my SMTP relay/sending works out of Mystic first? I entered info but not sure if messages can be relayed....

    Cheers and thanks!

    Hi Zarniwoop,

So, how are y'all handling this on Mystic? My last attempt at th

This is an interesting question. I am slowly going through setting up my BBS, but this is on my todo list ... Unless you figure it out before me, once I am on this task I will definitely let you know.

tbh i would recommend against this..

i have an entry box for an email address if they want to put one in and it just says something like "i don't email or use this address for anything, but if you forget your password and cry, and my only option is to send you a new password via sysop@sucks.com well.. too bad" ;)

just verify people by hand.. if the email looks good enough, or even if it doesn't, who cares? they'll call a couple times and either complain via bbs email that they want to post, or are happy only playing games, or they were never going to call back anyways. if they ask to post and their name is "John Doe" or whatever just tell them you need a real sounding one for fidonet.

but you'll definitely have people who are just like "nah i'm good" when they see they need to verify email.. you might think "well i didn't want them anyways" .. why are you bothering at all then? it's not like a verified email tells you anything more about the person on the other end..

I agree, I just like to know how to do something... TBH, would probably disable it right after it is working :)

How about "Reset Password" stuff ... Currently all users can do if they forget it is email me ... Does anyone know how to set up ability to send them new pass via email?

    Cheers,

I get where you're coming from and agree in part. You don't want to create road blocks to a form of communication that is holding on by its nails. *But* I wonder where the legal side of things comes with BBSes in the land of the rest of the Internet?

I know, we're not exactly the same as "the Internet" and are probably more or less forgotten - but I wonder what legal ramifications there are on things. Some peope are also "too precious" these days "oh you said this, *cry cry*"

    Anyhoo, off topic...

Could, but if they go to the effort of verifying, then it saves me and gets them into more of the BBS. Can always have another few levels that get access to specific things later once they hang around.

I also like the idea of being able to atlest have the ability to reset my pasword without waiting.

Again, path of least resistance and not make the road bumpy...

What are you using as your relay host?

I would presume that it gets put into the logs?! (I've not looked to be honest - it worked out the box for me). I guess ensure under General Optiosn that SMTP Send is enabled..

When setting up a new ueser, mine goes through the normal stuff (questions) then application approval (ENTER and !) and after that, the email verification. Then after that, a message to the sysop.

Maybe some mod is breaking something in the flow *shrug*. Sorry, I'm still learning too.

... Beware of the Leopard. It's listed under "System Requirements."

i don't recall who it is (maybe they'll chime in..) but someone knows a few of the laws and posts once in a while.. there were a few legal rulings that apply to the internet too that were originally brought about because of BBSes

yeah.. and maybe that's one of those things.. level 20 for dovenet, fsx (real names not required) .. level 30 once you've taken a peek at their account and their realname isn't "Seymour Butts"
