First, I wanted to check messages on the BBS. I copied my SyncTerm and Multimail directories to my work laptop - so far so good. Didn't bring my editor install. That's OK, I can install it from the web. Crowdstrike would beg to differ - as it's wont to do. I logged into the console and whitelisted it, but apparently you can't force a policy update. I tried rebooting, but to no avail.

I have the new Microsoft Edit - it's interesting. Not sure how it'll handle word wrapping in a packet.

I've seen their new Edit, and it looks interesting. I've heard it will be included by default in Windows 11 now too.

It looks like it's available for Linux as well.. Microsoft has a GitHub page for it, with downloads:

Looks good from this angle. I think MultiMail handles your word wrapping, though, so it probably doesn't matter what editor you use. From my limited use of MultiMail with nano as my editor (using the entire 160 character wide terminal), when posted into MultiMail it has always displayed 80 columns wide.

If there was any settings in MultiMail to change that, I didn't see them.

Are you looking for an exact replacement that has the same features and behaves the same way, or just an alternative text editor? If you want an alternative editor, SemWare's QEdit was around in the DOS days and there was a DOS version of that, so that's an option. I used to use it, and I think it's pretty good.

I still use EDIT.COM .... it's only 3 files from Win95 or Win98 EDIT.COM, EDIT.HLP and EDIT.INI. Copy those to your path and enjoy EDIT.COM. I used it to code Renegade and to make the Renegade Web page.

Yes, more or less. Qedit begat The SemWare Editor for DOS, which became TSE for DOS/Windows.

I was trying to find a copy of QEDIT online to download for my on-the-road editing, forgot they had a DOS TSR version, when terminate-and-stay-resident programs were all the rage. Borland Sidekick was the one to beat - lots of add-ons that come in handy when you're running a single-tasking OS.

(aside: I ended up with a copy of VDE for DOS - configurable, uses the Wordstar key bindings by default, and I had it in my util directory. I used to use it for creating tfiles that I wanted to have justified paragraphs.

hahahah ... Yeah, new release here sometime this year. I added a lightbar setup for the message reading, and I am just finishing up the light bar setup for the file listings. Figured after 23 years it's about time. :)

Any DOS editor would run in DOSBOX and give you a better experience than edit.exe.

"DOSey format"? No such thing. A .TXT file is a .TXT file.

DOS Text files : line endings = CR/LF (\r\n) ; EOF marker = CTRL-Z
UNIX/Linux Text files : line endings = LF (\n)

Depending on the software used to edit/read/write the text file, this could make a difference in behavior.
