Run win7. NTVDM is fucked more and more with each update to be able to run a BBS.

I gave up. Windows 11 with NTVDMx64 was totally unusable for me. I gave u on my new PCs (what a waste of money...) and went back to the laptop with a win11 host and a win10 32 bit guest VM. It works pretty well, except for some occasional VM shenanigans.

I run the BBS on an old Dell Optiplex I grabbed from ebay for like $40.00

Yeah, I'm currently running my BBS on a Dell workstation I bought from eBay. You can find some pretty good deals there.

Thats why I don't understand all of the people going I can't run this on my machine, on a vm, under win11, etc. Spend $40 for your hobby and BOOM .. everything works with the OS that is close enough to what it was supposed to be run on.

I live in a studio apt. My main PC and laptop take up too much room. I have to do this on mini-PCs.

Still, I've seen some fairly inexpensive mini PCs. There's this one for instance, which is a refurbished one for $199:

I imagine you might be able to find ones that are less expensive on eBay too.

When I got it, I wanted to move it to OS/2, but WARP v4 kept crashing on install, So I didn't feel like screwing with finding what drivers was crashing it, so I kept Win10, then downgraded to Win7 once NTVDM was getting "updated" and killing off being able to run some of my older door games.

Even cheaper than that. I bought a Lenovo ThinkCentre M73 from Amazon two years ago for $92 delivered. It's what I my BBS on. Great little PC, runs like a champ. Windows 10 64-bit.

NTVDMx64 works great for me, for the record, circling back to the original topic.

Yeah, from what I've heard, it sounds like NTVDMx64 can be installed on Windows 10 without too much fuss, but I think it has trouble on Windows 11. I have Windows 11 and have tried installing it myself and ran into trouble.. I didn't really look into it further to try to get it working, and I felt a little nervous about messing up my system.

I believe some of the requires bits of code have been removed from windows 11 hence NTVDMx64 doesn't run well, or at all. Hence I have stayed with win 10 32 bit.

Ok, to be able to do that and not rely on a VM, I've ordered a HP EliteDesk 800 G3 SFF Windows 10 PC (Intel Core i5 / 8GB RAM / 256GB SSD) i5-7500. It should fit nicely under my printer. I just don't like the idea of the majorly increased power consumption driving up my power bill compared to an N100. At leastl this old hardware shouldn't have any problems with ntvdm...

I think that is a decent choice. It might have a slightly higher TDP of 35W due to the i5, but when idle it should come close to idle power consumption of an N100.
So there shouldn't be any worries about the electricity bill with this one.
And with the i5 you are on the x86 side of things and have more then enough power to run windows, a BBS and much more on it.

May I ask how much it cost?

I'm confused. Please explain to me the significant difference in power consumption and costs of your electric bill between the Energy-star rated SFF Elitedesk and the N100.
