At one time owning a computer put you in the 'elite' club..

And if you built them, others were in awe of you. Of course, to
    >maintain that mystique you never told them /how/ you built it.
    >Yeah, it was a good time to be a nerd.

It was quite something when I think back on it. I'd never even
touched a computer when I started buying parts to build my
first one, and it was hard enough to pay the bills at that time
since I was carrying a house mortgage on my own after a breakup.
Even building it myself it would take about 2 weeks income to
buy the parts, so that was a big expense at the time.

I was thinking of buying a cheaper system, likely a Commodore 64,
when I ran into a friend in a mall that I hadn't seen for years
and we got talking about it, since he was working with computers,
and he told me how I could build something better for less money.

And I guess the rest is history..

I must have been reading too many Science Fiction books back
then making me feel that I just HAD to get a computer.. B)

My situation with computers and related equipment was a little
different because I was an adult, 27 or 28, before they even
became an option. I owned a house before I got my first computer.

Me too. I think I was 27 when I got my first Atari800 computer... and I too already owned a house. 1981 or 82 I think.

Weird, I to was 27 when I got my first computer, a Commodore Vic-20, soon followed by a TRS80 Color Computer 2.

I bought my first house in 1975 when I was just 21 years old..
Very small and needed work but it was a start, and I lived there
and fixed the place up over the next 10 years. Then, over the next
18 months or so I bought and sold 2 other places before I gave up on
the city (and normal society) and moved up here to my cabin in the
woods on the shores of Georgian Bay..

Temporarily, you understand.. I figured I'd soon go back to
work in a normal job/situation again pretty soon..
That was 39 years ago.. It hasn't happened yet.. Maybe soon.. B)
